Professional photographer Raphaël Hétier, working increasingly on outdoor reports and trips abroad, decided it was time to kit out his trusty HZJ75 properly. Having adjusted the all-important suspension, our friend set about fitting an Airflow Snorkel...
The Airflow kit contains:
First of all, it's worth noting that this project is well within the grasp of the average home mechanic - the key to success is just being methodical!!
1/ Open the box and check if everything is there!!! Sounds obvious, but there's nothing more frustrating than finding a piece missing when you're half way through the job...
2/ Remove the secondary indicator from the wing (unscrew the 2 screws) and remove Toyota Land Cruiser logo.
3/ Open the air box to get access to the inside of the wing so you can remove the standard tube.
4/ Carefully place the template using tape.
5/ Mark the centre of the 76 mm hole that you'll have to make + the four 10 mm screw holes.
6/ Drill out the holes. Like Raphaël, if you don't have a hole saw, you can drill a series of small holes inside the marked circle. Now the hole is ready, smooth off the edges with a file. Don't forget to add some anti-rust using a small brush.
7/ Use the small mounting plate as a template to make the 2 holes for the fixing the snorkel next to the windscreen, then push in the plastic plugs ready for when you add the screws.
8/ Install the body of the snorkel and screw it on the wing.
9/ Connect the body of the snorkel to the air box, using the "elbow", and to the flexible hoses (the big one for the wing and the other small one between the elbow and the air box).
10/ Replace the air box on its central mount.
11/ Fit the head and fasten it with the clamp.
After a testing period in Romania, driving more then 6000 km, Raphaël is very enthusiastic about his investment; whilst taking group photos he found himself driving most of the time behind other 4x4s and inevitably on the receiving end of all the dust thrown up by the other vehicles. However, when he checked his air filter after a long run it was still almost clean! Regarding the performance of the engine, he didn't notice anything. Not surprising as the standard 4.3L engine already breathes very well.
We can say that the Airflow snorkel really does what it's meant to do: draw in cleaner and fresher air than with a standard intake system.
Raphaël did one more important test... Even when spraying water at the head of the snorkel with a hose the filter remained completely dry! The head is designed to evacuate the water and to protect the engine.
Remember, the manufacturer recommends placing the head facing forward, unless it's snowing or you're passing through deep puddles. Airflow offers snorkels for all the main 4x4's : Toyota, Nissan, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Ford, Jeep etc.
We can supply snorkels for all types of vehicles and for all brands: Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Land Rover, Jeep, Suzuki / Santana...
