Laurent Flament, 51 yrs old, co-driver
At 47, Laurent Flament, who has three Dakar participations with two finishes to his credit, wanted to offer himself one last Dakar on two-wheels in 2006 before finally moving on to four as a way of experiencing the rally from a different angle. However, his entry form was denied because it arrived too late. Luck has a way of sorting things out. Adelio Machado, a Portuguese friend of his brother was looking for an experienced co-driver to join him on his first Dakar. Their success exceeded all their expectations. "We finished 39th overall", remembers Laurent, still thrilled over this unexpected performance. "Adelio didn't have any rally experience, he had never even seen a dune in his life! It was like a driving school in the race: everything had to be explained to him...We decided to go slowly, never looking at the ranking." This cautious policy proved to be successful. Now, the duo isn't counting on changing tactics for this South American edition. "Our only victory will be to finish", assures Laurent Flament. "We will have to adapt to the tracks, slow the rhythm and just make sure we arrive at the bivouac every night." The change of scenery for the 2009 Dakar pleases the Frenchman, who has taken part in several editions of the legendary January raid. "Paris- Cape town, Paris-Dakar-Paris...this race is just crazy", confides this man with a Dakar logo tattooed on his arm. No doubt he and his friend Adelio will make the most of every minute of the rally.
