4x4 Competition - AER 2016

In the best tradition!

Africa Eco Race® is first and foremost a desire for simplicity, conviviality and authenticity in a race where human and sporting values have taken precedence over the superficial.

The competition takes the values of the yesteryear rally raids, without forgetting the new security and environmental aspects. The bivouacs are placed far from the cities and competitors find themselves in the desert left to fend for themselves.

Mutual aid, solidarity and conviviality these are the words used the most by those who have experienced this adventure. The Africa Eco Race rally, welcomes amateurs and professionals, and takes place over more than 6000 km.

From the 27th of December 2015 to the 10th of January 2016.

They’re off!

It took a day and two nights to cross the Mediterranean to Nador, which meant that the Africa Eco Race caravan was three hours behind the schedule agreed with the shipping company. As a result of this, the particularly tight schedule for the first day was impossible to keep.

It’s safe to say that the 8th edition of the Africa Eco Race began in difficult conditions despite a short selective section.

The news so far!

The latest news from the Gard team

Stage 1: Nador to El Jorf Haman. Given the delay with the boat, they wasted no time starting the stage. It was a difficult special with plenty of rocks, dust and a number of pitfalls to avoid. The stage went well and they were happy with their first day and are looking forward to tomorrow.

Stage 2: Jorf El Hamam to Tagounite. Sand, sand and more sand, rocks and a few wadis. Everything was fine until they stopped for a drink and a bite to eat. They heard a rattling noise coming from the underside of the car. As they were not far from a CP (control point) they asked permission to join Zagora for repairs. In Zagora they found Ali, a mechanic who sorted out the problem. It was nothing major but its best to play safe.

Stage 3: Tagounite in Assa. A stony stage with a lot of banging about. There were also a number of wadis and some sand. But overall the stage went well. Unfortunately Jacky in car number 227 had a clutch problem in the first kilometres, and Philip in car number 235 had some navigation problems. After repairs for one and founding an easier route for the other, they both reached the bivouac late at night but they managed to leave for the 4th stage to Remz El Assa Quebir.

Summary

" The Africa Eco Race 2016 will go down as the most successful of the eight editions, thanks in part to the weather which was perfect and to the fact that no grain of sand slipped into the well-oiled organization of this race.

In sporting terms, René Metges balanced course, the quality of the road books, the different types of terrain encountered and especially a homogeneous line-up, made the battle for the victory intense, which is rare for this discipline.

The race took place in a very agreeable and friendly atmosphere, in the image of the attitude of the competitors during the two weeks in Africa, on the course and at the bivouac"

Roll on the 2017 edition!
