What are Aviation-style braided brake hoses?

This type of brake hose features a PTFE inner (polytetrafluoroethylene) which offers excellent resistance to heat and chemical aggression and a braided stainless steel outer covering.
The braided outer prevents the inner from dilating and therefore offers improved braking efficiency.

Why fit Aviation-style braided brake hoses?

This type of brake hose is commonly fitted as part of a suspension lift project. They are also a good choice if you simply want to improve your brake performance.

As soon as they are fitted, you'll notice that the brake pedal feels more effective. You can also go one step further and fit a set of off DBA drilled & slotted brake discs!

In this tutorial, we will show you step-by-step how to fit aviation-style braided brake hoses.

We chose to work on a Nissan patrol Y61, but the steps are basically the same for most 4x4 models.

TOOLS

To fit Aviation-style  brake hoses on your 4x4, you need:

. Flat spanners

. A container to collect the brake fluid

. A suitably long hose

. Rags

. Brake fluid

. Degreaser

DIFFICULTY

To give you an idea of the difficulty level of our tutorials, we note them from 1 to 5

Fitting aviation-style braided brake hoses is a level 2 job.

WORKSHOP

1 - The Nissan Patrol Y61 Sport model only uses 6 brake hoses because it has no ABS. If you have ABS on yours, there is an extra hose and the aviation-style hose kit includes 7 parts.

Be careful if you have a Patrol Y61 3.0 Sport model (therefore without ABS), we have modified the part of the hose above the front axle, because not enough outlets to connect to the brake lines.

On a Luxury model (i.e with ABS): no problem, the kit fits perfectly.

2 - Existing front hose above front axle.

3 - Existing front caliper hoses.

4 - Rear caliper hoses.

5 - Hose above rear axle.

6 - Aviation-style braided hose fitted to front calipers.

7 - Aviation-style braided hose fitted to rear calipers.

8 - Aviation-style braided hose fitted above rear axle.

9 - Aviation-style braided hose fitted to front calipers.

Having fitted the new hoses and checked for any leaks, all that remains is to fully bleed the brake system. Refer to your workshop manual if you are not sure where the bleed points are located.

As always, be sure to clean up any areas that have been in contact with brake fluid.
