What does the brake master cylinder do?

When you press the brake pedal the master cylinder controls the callipers and/or the wheel cylinders of your vehicle's braking system.

Since July 1976 to comply with French legislation, separating the braking system into two independent circuits has led to the widespread use of tandem master cylinders.

The tandem master cylinder is made up of two independent pumping elements: the primary circuit is directly controlled by the force of the foot on the brake pedal or the brake booster. The secondary circuit is controlled by the action of the pressure of the primary circuit and by a pre-stressed spring.

Why change the brake master cylinder?

If one circuit fails, the other circuit will brake two of the wheels. The failure of one circuit results in a longer brake pedal stroke and a longer stopping distance.
