In this step-by-step article, we'll take you through how to grease your prop-shafts.

Why grease? Prop-shafts must be greased regularly and especially following intensive offroading. The grease prevents the UJ's (universal joints) and sliders from running dry. Damp and dirt can work their way in over time and lead to premature wear.

So don't forget to grease!

When this operation is carried out, optimum lubrication is obtained when the old grease is seen to be squeezed out of the UJs (universal joints) or the prop shaft slide.

We used a Nissan Patrol Y60 for this tutorial by the steps are basically the same for any make of 4x4.

TOOLS

  • Grease gun
  • Grease cartridges
  • Rags

DIFFICULTY

To give you an idea of the difficulty level of our tutorials, we note them from 1 to 5.

This job is level 1

1 - The rear prop shaft features 3 grease points

2 - The first one is for the UJ

3 - The second is for the sliding section of the shaft. The old grease is ejected out of the area circled in red

4 - The third one is for the second UJ to the rear of the transfer box

5 - The front prop shaft also features 3 grease points

6 - The first grease point is for the UJ at the transfer box end of the shaft

7 - The second one is for the sliding section of the shaft. Once again, the old grease is ejected out of the area circled in red.
