Air filter - why so important?

The air filter is designed to trap dust particles in the air intake without hindering the flow of air to the engine. It also deadens the noise produced by the intake. It's a vital part of your 4x4!

Air filter - why replace?

From increased fuel consumption and loss of power to black smoke, a dirty air filter can seriously affect your engine.

This is why its replacement is necessary.

In this article we will take you through how to change your air filter step-by-step. An easy job!

For this tutorial we've used a Toyota Landcruiser HDJ80 and we replaced the filter with a classic paper filter. Please note that for this particular model there are also washable filters available. The example of replacing the air filter that we are dealing with here was carried out on a Toyota HDJ 80. For this, we replaced the air filter with a classic paper model but it's worth noting that there are also washable air filters available

This tutorial is valid for almost all 4x4 models, as well as Toyota, that have air filters mounted in the same way.

TOOLS

All you need is a clean cloth to change the air filter on your 4x4!

DIFFICULTY

To give you an idea of the difficulty level of our tutorials, we note them from 1 to 5. Air filter replacement on your 4x4 is a level 1 job.

WORKSHOP

1 - Lift the bonnet on your HDJ80 and you'll see the large round metal container (black) on the left. You've identified your air box!

2 - Undo the wing nut on the top.

3 - Undo the 3 metal clips around the edge. Now you can remove the lid.

4 - Even if the turbo air intake (that runs off from the top) prevents you from lifting the lid completely away you will have enough access to get to the filter with a bit of twisting & turning.

5 - The colour of the old filter says it all! It was definitely time to install a clean filter.

6 - Now take you clean cloth and wipe around the interior of the air box before slipping the new filter into place.

7 - When the new air filter is in position & correctly centered, replace the lid, screw the wing back onto the top and close the 3 clips around the edge.

Tip: On the underside of the air box (turbo side), there is a small metal container held by 2 clips (identical to those for the lid). Undo these clips and empty the container. There are always remains of leaves, dust, etc ... Clean it out and clip it back into place.
