Why choose Profender shock absorbers?

First of all, these shock absorbers are produced under ISO9000/TS16949 quality assurance standards. PROFENDER's research and development department concentrates all its efforts on 4x4 suspensions, they are recognized worldwide for their ability to innovate and offer an irreproachable level of quality.

From low-pressure twin-tube shock absorbers, remote reservoir “piggyback” shocks to sophisticated coilover products, PROFENDER shock absorbers can be used on the track, for extreme endurance, and are amazing on the road.

Profender was established in 1976 in Thailand which has the highest proportion of all-terrain vehicles and pick-ups in the world, relative to the vehicle fleet.  It’s also the world's largest producer of pick-ups, which is a real advantage for Profender when it comes to developing and testing their products.

Euro4x4parts co-founder, Françoise Hollender and her companion Franck Daurelle have been successfully racing for the Euro4x4parts team using PROFENDER - coilover and bypass shock absorbers, since 2014.

In order to meet the needs of our customers and their vehicles Euro4x4parts has chosen PROFENDER for their expertise, experience and the premium quality of their range of 4x4 suspension solutions.

What is a remote reservoir shock absorber?

A remote reservoir shock absorber is a monotube shock absorber that contains a pressurisation system which keeps the oil and the gas separate. The inert (non-reactive) gas used is nitrogen. This differs from a twin tube shock absorber that has gas and oil in the same chamber.

The remote reservoir means the pressurisation function is separated from the shock. In other words, the remote reservoir is a remote hydraulic pressure accumulator.

The purpose of the pressurisation is to prevent cavitation around the oil rolling valves. Cavitation is a physical phenomenon which consists of creating a vacuum cavity during a movement causing a depression between a solid body and a liquid.

This means that during expansion, the shock absorber piston linked to the rod rises. The increase in the volume released by this rise will cause a momentary depression of the lower part of the shock absorber, this has the effect of generating dissolved gas bubbles (boiling) in the oil as it passes through the valves. These gas bubbles behave in their own way as shock absorbers which can adversely affect the overall performance of the shock absorber.

If the lower part of the shock absorber is pressurised, the depression that is created when the rod rises disappears and the shock absorber performs as required in all situations.

The purpose of the pressurisation is of course not to lift the vehicle, that is the role of the coil spring.

By splitting the functions, the remote reservoir design means that the shock itself can offer great travel (typically sought after in 4x4 set-ups) and the reservoir can be located in a more protected area (for example on a chassis rail).

What are the advantages of the remote reservoir design?

  • Larger volume of oil: oil being the heat carrier, a larger capacity of oil will be able to absorb more heat.
  • Larger heat exchange surface: compared to a simple monotube, the surface of the cylinder acts as a heat exchanger.
  • Much greater oil transfer capacity: as the tank is separate, the volume can be adjusted to suit requirements.
  • You can also choose to give it a different diameter from that of the shock absorber body or even lengthen or shorten the length of the reservoir.

Euro4x4parts offers spare parts to service the shock absorbers if necessary.

Some of our remote reservoir Profender shock absorbers are adjustable. The adjustment wheel is built into the reservoir and the required setting can be simply dialled in.

Vehicle performance with Profender shock absorbers

These shock absorbers are firm at high speed and therefore minimise unwanted body roll, vibration or bounce. They offer excellent articulation and improved cooling and endurance and as such are particularly well suited to the most severe conditions of use.

Profender shock absorbers behave brilliantly both on the road and on fast tracks. Thanks to their improved travel they increase the vehicle's off-road capabilities. They are specifically designed to withstand high temperatures and significant mechanical stress on all types of terrain.
