Wrangler, a recent name.

In 1955, the CJ-5 was launched under the Jeep brand. The image of the car went beyond its utilitarian status to become seen as a leisure vehicle. With the CJ-7, launched in 1967, the Jeep became more civilized thanks to increased dimensions, a longer wheelbase and a few friendly extras.

But it wasn't until 1987 that the name Wrangler was used for the first time and replaced the CJ. Considerably more modern and better equipped, it allowed enthusiasts to use it as their main car while retaining the off-road capacity of its predecessor.

History

1987 marked a revolution. The CJ-7 ceased production and wa replaced by a new model that used the name Wrangler. This first Wrangler, the YJ, shocked purists by abandoning the traditional round headlights for rectangular models. As for the rest, the Wrangler remained rather similar in design to its ancestors.

In 1997:

Jeep had a change of heart and brought back the round headlights on the front grille of the Wrangler. More civilized than ever before, the Wrangler TJ was available with either a four-cylinder or a six-cylinder engine.

In 2007:

The Wrangler JK came as a complete redesign for the 2 and 4 door models with a longer wheelbase. The 4x4 off-road adventure philosophy was slightly put aside in favour of on-road performance which is designed to be closer to a modern SUV. This change didn't go down particularly well with purists.

In 2018:

After years of rumours, Jeep launches the JL,  a whole new Wrangler generation. An all new 4-cylinder, 200hp, 2.2l diesel engine  replaces the 200hp 2.8l CRD. In terms of looks, the Wrangler features a new style grille.
