CUP 180: The southern cup!
The event was created in 1995 and although the name has changed the essence of the race has stayed the same. It’s one of the biggest amateur 4x4 and multi adventure competitions in the world.
It’s a team event on skill testing courses over several days, where strategy, teamwork and organization take precedence.
The main objective is adventure, teams have to overcome a number of difficulties, and demonstrate their talents in navigation, orientation, driving and map reading. Each team must choose the best solutions for each situation.

Where and when?
Morocco from the 24th to the 29th of April 2016.
What’s it all about?
It's not a race about speed; it’s an adventure where the tactics, strategy, skill and team spirit are the main ingredients for success.
The exceptional host country, Morocco was chosen for its contrasts.
The competition consists of several stages on different types of terrain: trial areas in the desert, navigating through unknown regions, sandbanks, dune, old tracks, and more.
There’s no road-book for the CUP 180, so competitors must choose the route that best suits their circumstances, their experiences and their tactics.
Vehicles
Prototypes are not allowed, thus ensuring a balanced competition between "normal" vehicles, amateurs and professionals!

The prologue
The Prologue event isn’t held every year, but when there is one it enables new teams to learn the mechanism of the CUP 180, and "old" teams can revive their competitive spirit.
The prologue is over a weekend.
The 2016 edition is in Guadix, on the 16th and 17th of January.
A Special and really different Prologue!
Participants, organizers and 4x4 fans met on the 16th of January under a spectacular blue sky, so typical of Guadix (Granada), for the Prologue of the CUP 180.
The 36 vehicles taking part in the Cup 180 met at the town Hall on the square in Las Palomas, opposite the superb Cathedral. It was an impressive gathering with a spectacular backdrop. After preparing the vehicles with their stickers, Juan Antonio Muñoz Agustin Jimenez, member of the CUP 180 organization, conducted a briefing with all the details of the Prologue.
The National Police escorted the participants, supporters and the impressive 4x4 caravan through the typical neighbourhoods and past the beautiful caves of Guadix.
Euro4x4parts was privileged to have two excellent local guides, Oscar and Alberto. Aboard Alberto's Nissan Patrol GR they accompanied us the entire time, entertaining us with the local history and interesting details about the old City of Guadix.
The Los Abades service area was the starting point for the Prologue. After distributing the GPS Data Loggers to track every team, the participants headed off to hunt for waypoints scattered over a wide area of the Sierra de Guadix.
The first meeting point was at the obligatory 4pm checkpoint. It was here that we could really appreciate the amazing Guadix landscape with a hilly backdrop that reminds us of Morocco. A good choice of location for the prologue!
The participants arrived bit by bit, in groups or on their own. Some of them arrived with a screech of brakes in a cloud of dust while others sedately drove up with their indicators flashing. The organisation noted everybody’s time.
The first stage of the Prologue ended around 6.30pm. Then it was off to the Cuevas del Tío Tobas, where Juan Antonio Muñoz regaled us with his presentation of the 5 stages of the Moroccan competition, which is in April. We enjoyed the beautiful photographs and noted the similarities between the landscapes of Guadix and Morocco. With a little effort we could feel the magic of this beautiful country.
Sunday 17th, after a very cold night a beautiful blue sky was waiting for us. The 36 participants took off in search of the day’s waypoints.
The El Colmenar site hosted an impressive trial exhibition carefully prepared by the organization
This audience could feast their eyes on the 4x4 circuit and the dexterity of the participants.
We were able to watch the crossing of the obstacles, enjoy the roar of the engines, and measure the mastery handling of the winches. A very busy morning where vehicles and participants gave their all.
The Prologue ended with a very enjoyable meal, at the Venta Nueva.
The weekend went by too quickly. We are looking forward to April and the beginning of the legendary CUP 180, which will bring back good memories for those who have already experienced this competition, and create plenty for those taking part for the first time!
