4x4 Travel - Trabant Expedition

An iconic car, serving environmental protection!

A Trabant is not a 4x4, for sure but it is a classic car with character and it’s an original choice of vehicle for an expedition!

Trabant Expedition is Zsolt Vadasz, a Hungarian who loves adventure and challenges. He intends to travel from Paris to Senegal, for a waste collection action. His goal is to improve the awareness of environmental protection.

The expedition should continue into Asia, Europe, and part of the African continent.

The purpose of the Trabant Expedition is to show that it is possible to go anywhere with an old car made of cheap minimal raw materials!

First departure on April 14th, 2021, to Tunisia!

MARCH 2022 - HUMANITARIAN ACTION IN UKRAINE!

The Trabant expedition went to Ukraine, to help the Hungarians who live in the Carpathians.

Two of the Trabants and a Tesla left last March, during the third week of the war, to take warm clothes, canned goods and hygiene products.

A journey of 1,500 km, with two days in Ukraine.

Zsolt Vadasz and his team delivered the donations to help the refugees. Afterwards, with the help of an old friend from the Bamako rally, they went to Csop, which is the village that borders Ukraine and Hungary. There, at the station, they distributed sandwiches to those who were waiting for the trains to flee the country.

2021 on the road!

October

"Last spring, Trabant Expedition transported parcels to Africa sent by the Afrique Autrement foundation.

The Expedition left with two Trabant station wagons with toy pedal cars on their roofs.

One of the cars left Provence with Pál Kozsuch and Zsolt Vadász, the other from Hungary with Zoltán Szűcs and Attila Fehér.

The two Trabants ended up in Tuscany in Civitavecchia near Rome where they left together for Tunisia.

The group passed the mandatory quarantine in the desert, having fun.

The Trabants withstood the conditions well largely thanks to their experience since it was their seventh African action.

Of course, these cars are very different from street Trabants. They are equipped with winches, engine protection plates and other elements necessary for difficult terrain.

This trip is over, but the Expedition has already planned the next one!

It will be to Lac Rose in Senegal, where they want to pick up litter around the lake."

The project was to shoot a film, collect waste, and talk to the local population about environmental protection.

More trips are planned, but they depend on the virus restriction measures.

  • Morocco
  • Mauritania

The cars

With the help of Euro4x4parts, Zsolt has equipped the Trabants with winches, skid plates, powerful compressors, sand plates, and Led lighting systems.

The Trabant was manufactured in East Germany until the early 90s. This symbol of the GDR has become a cult car in Germany, just like the Volkswagen Beetle.

"Trabant" means "satellite" in German. The name refers to the Sputnik satellite sent into space in 1957 by the USSR as part of their conquest of space, during the Cold War. This small car was produced in the GDR, former East Germany, between 1957 and 1991, by the manufacturer IFA.

At the time of the separation from Germany, it was virtually the only car produced in East Germany (along with the Wartburg and a few other brands). Manufactured with the means at hand in a difficult economic context, it was the object of mockery as its performance and comfort were limited. Almost 3 million Trabi (nickname of the Trabant) were produced. (source: sixt.fr)
