Your vehicle's radiator cap, also known as a safety valve, isn't just there to cover the top opening of your radiator. It plays a crucial role in the proper cooling of your engine. The radiator cap ensures a tight seal in the cooling system, allowing pressure to build up within it. This increase in pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant, similar to how a pressure cooker works. As a result, the engine's coolant temperature can reach up to 120°C.
Why Change the Radiator Cap?
Over time, it's necessary to replace the radiator cap as it can simply wear out or "fatigue." A malfunctioning cap can lead to the failure of the valve, which usually results in the explosion of the cooling system hoses. Regularly checking and replacing the radiator cap as needed is a small but essential step in maintaining your vehicle’s cooling system and preventing more serious issues.
