4x4 Travel - The Baikal Race

A far reaching physical challenge!

Our travellers are not afraid of anything, certainly not the cold!

Their challenge is to cross in full autonomy, Lake Baikal using ice yachts!

In their own words their objective is: "to cross Lake Baikal from top to bottom (636 km), with no motorized help, just ice yachts of their own making."

A UAZ 2206 (its a Russian minibus) will be used to transport the ice yachts. They will also use it for the return journey, on the Silk Road!

A beautiful adventure in perspective, which starts on the 1st of February 2017 for 3 months of Siberian shivers!

They're on their way!

The Baikal Race

This fabulous adventure is also a physical and environmental challenge.

Type of expedition: Raid Ice yacht (land yacht + pulk)

  • An expedition that has never before been attempted without assistance
  • Minimum duration: 17 days (28th  February – 17th  March 2017). Return by the Silk Road aboard an UAZ 2206.

Motivations and originality of the expedition:

  • Rarity of Raids using ice yachts
  • Its a unique film and photographic project with scenes filmed under the transparent ice.

Lake Baïkal

Lake Baikal is located in southern Siberia, in eastern Russia. It is the largest reservoir of freshwater in the world. Its transparency is unique with perfect visibility up to 40 metres deep. The lake is known as the "Sacred Sea" were the spirits are everywhere. Its fauna has species unique in the world.

The difficulties for an expedition of this type are related to the existence of faults that can reach more than one metre as well as piles of ice blocks which can also reach several meters in height. These faults and ice blocks can extend for several kilometres.

Finally, in addition to temperatures of -15 / -30 °, snow can be a serious slowing factor. The upper third of the lake is often covered with 30 to 40 cm of snow.
